This wine is made from a small block of newer Syrah clones that come from Australia (called the Shiraz clone 1). Like the big, jammy, opulent wines we know as Shiraz, our 2005 Hillside Syrah, if tasted blindly, could fool anyone into thinking that they had a glass of the best Barossa had to offer. This dark purple wine has a nose full of blueberry, coffee, bittersweet chocolate, plum and floral notes (mainly violets). The initial flavor explodes with candied red fruit, cola spice, and coffee, finishing with a more subtle blueberry cassis while finishing with very pleasant, yet soft tannins.

Our 2005 Katie O. Syrah, which is named after our daughter Katie, is even bigger and bolder than the 2004 (and that was a Robert Parker 90!). This wine comes from the "Estrella" clone, one of the older clones of Syrah that was predominant here in Paso Robles from the early 80's to now. With aromas of clove, smoke, and cigar box up front, there are also subtle hints of black licorice, dried fruit, figs and bay leaves. The palate is blackberry up front with secondary flavors of red currant and sweet anise. The finish is very long, all wrapped up with firm tannins.

Big extracted Syrah is what Maloy O'Neill has become famous for, and the 2005 Syrah Private Reserve is another great example. Dark and brooding, this ink bomb has all the characteristics of this consistently award-winning wine. Intense blueberry and stone-fruit flavors and distinct varietal characters of violet, pepper and licorice give way to tobacco, leather, cedar and our signature cigar box finish. Aged two years in 100% American Oak, this wine is drinkable now, but should age nicely for 10+ years. Enjoy this wine with gourmet burgers, grilled sausage, steak, herb-roasted chicken or kabobs.

The nose on this wine offers up classic cracked black peppercorns, with hints of black licorice, espresso bean and cherry cordial. The soft tannins offer up mocha, raspberry with chocolate balanced with nice subtle oak flavors. We recommend enjoying this with steak that is grilled, marinated or any other way you like your red meat. Roasted lamb would be another nice choice to partner with this wine. Of course, let's not forget chocolate.

This is the Australian Shiraz Clone of Syarh we have on our experimental "Hillside" vineyard. Hand manicured to produce super low yields, these vines produce a very different style than our French or Estrella clones we also produce. Big and extracted, like our other Syrah's, this wine has more spicy overtones with vanilla, coffee and stonefruit flavors. One of the winemakers personal favorites.

This monster wine is pushing the outer most limits of Syrah production. At 30 Brix at harvest, its a miracle that this wine fermented dry. Big plush berries dominate this wine. Butterscotch, vanilla and spice in the mid palate erase any perception of high alcohol this wine might have. I call this wine "three day weekend", because if you drink the whole bottle by yourself, you will be taking the next day off. Going fast so enjoy while you still can!

This is another blockbuster wine from Maloy O'Neill. The Estrella Clone from O'Neill Vineyards has consistently won gold medals year after year. If you like big extracted Syrah's, you are going to love this wine. Rich, supple black cherry flavors up front with silky smooth fine grain tannins and Maloy O'Neill's signature sweet cigar box finish. Don't wait too long to try this one!  Significant amount of tannins on the finish. This is a big, voluptuous wine which is well balanced, integrated and softly structured.
